This week featuring music from Dele Sosimi & The Estuary 21, Fleetwood Mac, Davishmar, BADBADNOTGOOD and A Tribe Called Quest
Release Date: 5 April 2024

Dele Sosimi & The Estuary 21

Alágbára Má Mè Rò

Featured on the ‘Confluence LP’, this one was by far the standout, in no small part due to the horns featured alongside Dele Sosimi’s vocals. Hailing from Nigeria and a key player in Hackney’s Afrobeat scene, Sosimi’s roots trace back to the 80s when he joined the great Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 band. The whole album is fun but this one is different gravy!

Genre:
Afro Soul, Afro Beat, Jazz, Funk

Tasting notes:
Reminds me of a street party, will get everyone moving.

Looking for more:

From the same album, Mo Se B’ólá tán is also a great tune. You’ll also need to check out Fela & Femi Kuti’s work.

Release Date: 1 May 1971

Fleetwood Mac

The Original Fleetwood Mac

My Dad got this on vinyl recently and I hadn’t heard it before. It’s all recorded before the days of Stevie Nicks and the band’s commercial success of the mid-late 70’s. Featuring Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, John McVie & Mick Fleetwood, this album is much more raw and bluesy than what you’d associate with Fleetwood Mac. Cool album worth checking out.

Genre:
Rock, Rock & Roll, Blues

Tasting notes:
What the vibe of the song is, some listening recommendations, situation to listen etc.

Looking for more:

Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones is a good comparison of Bluesy Rock from this era.

Release Date: 13 October 2021

Davishmar

Garden Kisses

Had never heard of this guy and don’t think he is that big (yet), but man is a fantastic saxophonist. Smooth AF. Here is a sick version of it live as well!

Genre:
Jazz

Tasting notes:
Smooth Alto-Sax Jazz

Looking for more:

Anything from Tom Scott

Release Date: 15 May 2024

BADBADNOTGOOD

Mid Spiral: Chaos - EP

The new 6-track EP from one of the worlds leading modern jazz ensembles is completely instrumental and contains no listed features. It is a lot more guitar-heavy than a lot of their previous stuff which I thought was really cool. It leans heavily on  Leland Whitty’s work, with the rest of the band supporting nicely.

Genre:
Jazz,

Tasting notes:
Very relaxed, less complex and dense than some of the stuff on their previous album ‘Talk Memory’ which I actually like

Standout Tracks
Take Me With You is awesome and very different from their usual stuff

Looking for more:

I wouldn’t usually compare these fellas to bands like Khruangbin but the guitar focus definitely is a change up towards music like this, which is a plus for me!

Release Date: 29 July 1996

A Tribe Called Quest

Beats, Rhymes and Life

I’m a huge fan of Q-tip & Tribe, but I hadn’t listened to this album too much until I came across it the other day. Less popular than other albums in their discography but still great, despite the pretty corny 90’s album cover. If you’re a fan of 90’s hip-hop and haven’t listened to this, check it out.

Genre:
Hip-hop, Rap, Boom Bap

Tasting notes:
What the vibe of the song is, some listening recommendations, situation to listen etc.

Standout Tracks
Get A Hold – Absolutely love this one, classic Tribe tune
1nce Again – Shows homage to Check the Rhime which might be my favourite song from the crew. Real ones will know!

Looking for more:

Anything from Tribe or Busta Rhymes and also Digable Planets and Gang Starr
